Notes
Stockholm +50 presenters need legal status, but we don't (yet) have that. The event is 2-3 June, but registration for the main event ends tomorrow. We might be able to register through one of our core organisations. Tord might have thoughts on this… Other things needed are: website; evidence of xx, motivation letter. The idea is to connect local and international discussions Ashish: useful to particiapte and link up with peace movement, but doesn't need to be heavy involvement. Is there a people's movement event in advance? Tord: Want to put pressure to extend access/funds for organisations other than swedish ones. Every organisation that has a legal status should apply to attend - expecting that at least 4 people per organisation will be given places. Apologies for lateness - there's been a focus on local engagement over international. Dont' know how important it will be to be part of the internal process. Quite a few large Swedish NGOs are engaged and also quite a lot of international peace groups. Ashish: usually more useful to be outside and network with other activist groups, make some noise etc. Tord: there will be space for that 2 days before the main event and also in parallell with the main event. Insead of confronting people tend to stay in alternative nice spaces. GTA seem to relate to what's happening inside as well which makes more sense.
AP: Shrishtee to coordinate Adelante's response, together with Tord, Andrea and Vasna she could make a proposal for Adelantes involvement.
Adelante can make own activities in the selforganized part of the People's Forum, help organize a dialgoue between movements and political parties and armed movements as the zapatistas and contribute to the three main focus areas in the common program: rural and urban struggles and the connection between the local and the global. 3 themes will be addressed as soon as possible by global webinars on 1. Climate and environment, 2 Corporate capture of the UN with 50 years of experience to learn from and 3. Disarmament for a social and ecological just transition.
WSF - the website is open. There's a commission on youth as well as others. We have another working group on this. There will be regional fora leading up to the WSF Also thematic commissions during the event Articulation committee - developing content. Schizm has happened - one group has left because of conflict around the articulation committee. We need to be clear on what we want to bring to the WSF Via Campesina in Sweden is critiquing the new green deal and showing that it is eco-fascist. Rewilding is seen as a top-down, privilidged response by VC WSF is about gathering people together, creating new ideas, and working together. Of course this is complex, because there are diff movementes, cultures etc, but it would be nice that Adelante can have a short of conversation on how do we organize this space, how we put all that practices together. The main point of tension there is around decision making - the group that has left was trying to get WSF to move towards decision making/taking positions on issues. It's understandable why WSF are staying away from this - the original charter states that it is an open forum WSF is a powerful forum for us to be networking, collaborating, sharing understanding and maybe create people's assemblies where different issues can come together. People are looking for the ability to take common positions People don't see the WSF supporting climate/peace movements… can we use that space/platform to create entities that can move towards collective decision making. Good to know which of our members is planning to attend in person. Not good to go in there and polarise. Bringing the environmental movement into the WSF But it is really political and decision making - it helps those who are strong in advance, who can get there, who are media/funding oriented. IT's a sort of shopping mall. On the other hand there have been moments when it's gone beyond that - e.g. the international alliance of inhabitants who have used WSF as a way to organise. WSF provide translators - a key issue speically for movements that have no money. It's also a provocation - the environmental movement: 'we are the nice ones! We're so much better than Trade Unions - uninterested in society only in making careers. Advocating to use the WSF to bring movements together - those movements that engage with more than just their core issues are the ones to work with - and some of them are already connecting around that. AP: Andrea to convene another meeting of WSF working group AP: Andrea to register Adelante with WSF
Leonard: really unclear where the representation happens - when am I representing my own organisation and when Adelante? Ashish: 1) look at our own areas of representation in international events and then check with Adelante if there's an area of overlap to see if they'd like to piggy back on that represtentation 2) Adelante will organise specific events within which we'll all be there as members of Adelante
ADELANTE STRATEGIC PLAN
Focus on social movements. What do we want to achieve? We already have a common vision of how we define transformative change. Now need to develop areas of action/vision for Adelante We have the diagnosis/prognosis doc We need a one pager saying what we are and what we stand for - this can come from things that we've already written. We need to stard making our collective actions - not jsut at other international events - collective dialogues, webinars; papers - e.g what is our relationship with the state; should there be one? We can enable our different views on this as well as highlighting areas of agreement what are the topics that each organisation would like to explore PI are looking at the Cuban vaccination programme - that would be interesting to pick up and reflect on across the members of Adelante. Good not to commit ourselves to multiple activities - too many things to do and we won't do them well. We should clarify which events we plan to attend and how. Maybe pic on 2-3 issues for papers and something similar for webinars. Nothing should take too much effort for us. Important to be able to dig into issues intellectually. PI are contributing to something that's missing. Relationship between local and global - keeping the urban and rural dimensions in mind too. Exploring key issues more in deep. Define for ex,. 3 issues/ areas – A way to do it: webinar and then produce a paper– create a position paper Should decide on 4-5 events in the year and not do more. How do we create connections between these events if we contribute on different topics at each? Good to create working areas e.g. feminism, migration, solidarity economy … to give ourselves more structure. could be useful to go back to the original ideas 1) a dialogue between the networks in order to strengthen our understanding; share info; 2) asking how we together can help strengthen the global movement in response to the global crises - keeping our feet on the ground. What are the steps we can take over the next 2-3 years to build on both of these. Webinars/papers can contribute to #1. When we're taking part in the interenational events, that addresses #2 But also we wanted to support one another in what we're doing - if any of our networks needs support or is threatened, we can offer support/solidarity - if we're taking a stand, we can ask for help from the others. Our raison d' etre is to be able to make impact at the global level, even as we have our feet on the ground where we're based. Good idea to have the webinars→papers - we can start this soon - good to have people feeling involved in creating new knowledge. Also providing a global voice to local initiatives. In Canada first nation groups are having massive issues - there's a need to bring a global voice for indiginous peoples - and good to involve the many networks in supporting this. AP: Andrea, Leonard and Eva will summarise these ideas and send round to the other groups AP: Andrea also to email member groups and ask what their top 3 ideas for a webinar/conversation/paper would be - which we can prioritise and decide on next meeting (3rd March) AP: All groups to make sure at least one member comes to meetings
